April has been an active voice for diversity and inclusion for many years. Through her Consulting firm Crayon Strategies Inc., she helps organizations navigate the journey to become more diverse and create the conditions for authentic inclusiveness. She consults and coaches extensively with clients from various sectors, including health care, finance, engineering, education, and not-for-profit to name a few. Crayon Strategies provides assessment, strategic DEI plans, leadership awareness building, Executive Coaching, customized education, DEIB Frameworks, and pathways to remove the barriers for an inclusive, progressive work environment.

 

Joining the Government of Nova Scotia in 2018, April currently served as Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Prior she was Senior Executive Director to the Deputy Minister of Justice and previously was Executive Director of People and Culture – a division of the Public Service Commission. Formerly, April was a Partner with Knightsbridge Robertson Surrette for 16 years leading their Career Transition practice. April completed an Executive Master of Business at Saint Mary's University - Sobey School of Business and is also a Certified Career and Executive Coach.

 

As a believer in community engagement, April co-chaired the successful 2020 Halifax Mayoral campaign for Mayor Mike Savage. She currently sits on the Executive Board of the Neptune Theater and the IWF (International Women’s’ Forum). Previously, she served on the of boards of the North End Community Health Center, the IWK Foundation, the Halifax Partnership, the United Way Halifax, and the Black Business Initiative.

 

As proud a descendant of Africville, April chaired the Africville Heritage Trust which oversaw the building of the historic Africville Church-Museum.
